Hey everyone, my name is Anthony and welcome to my countdown of the year 2019.
Last time, i've covered my five pick of the worst films i have ever seen, ranging from disappointed to the worst. So enough with negativity, lets going to the positive for the films.
Today, i counted 12 movies that i considered from ok to the best. As always, these are my pick that i like or love to watch.
So before we get started, lets go with three Honorable Mentions.
Honorable Mention 1: Dora and the lost city of gold
With a movie based on a education kid shot, it was rather unlikely that we believe that it belongs for kids to watch, but i think its ok. The story is standard like an adventure films, the presentation looks nice, the characters are ok and the humors are rather childish, but again, it was gear towards kids who grew up with this show in Nick Jr.
Honorable Mention 2: Aladdin 2019
Due the to trending of movie remake, i find the movie itself is rather average while looking back. Though its nice to have one of my favorite film from Disney Renaissance era, but it has some problems, the movie is nearly copycat'd (not as much as The Lion King 2019), the story is similar, but with a new plot element, the characters are not bad at the time, the acting is rather fun, the musics are ok and the presentation looks sooo video game look like for the quality, especially with Will Smith in blue skinned Genie, jeez this looks so wrong and creepy...!
Honorable Mention 3: Steven Universe The Movie
Ok, i might be a cheater that this isn't a theatrical movie, it was in fact a TV movie on Cartoon Network, but honestly, this film is pretty good to watch, as a fan of SU. It picks up after the show's final episode where we originally to live happily ever after since our heroes build a school for reformed Gems. but of course, a new evil force with Spinel is going after Steven, which we still question for why Steven/Pink Diamond left her in the dark without coming back for thousands of years. Despite the flaws that we questioned over Steven/Pin Diamond's forgotten past, at least it was fun for watching with interesting story, animation is always look good, the characters are likable and songs are pretty good. As today, we have "Steven Universe Future" as a limited show. So if you're a fan of hybrid with Crystal gems, go watch this movie.
So now we got them out of way, lets get started the countdown, shall we?
Number 12: Captain Marvel
Lets started with the one that even though i like about Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel), but when it comes to this movie, although i liked it, just a little bit.
Though the story is rather nice where introduces her as a member of Starforce for taking over with their power against the Skrulls, despite that Carol Danvers is suffered an amnesia and can't stop having a nightmare about an elder lady with her right before she's stranded on Earth to first meeting young Nick Fury.
The reason why put this film in the lower list is that looking back, i can probably understand why some people felt that Brie Larson's role of Captain Marvel is pretty weak. I mean since im interested about Carol Danvers's Captain Marvel from her powers, her history and maybe her appearance, but when it comes to her in this movie, i find her ok, she has potential, but aren't as memorable as either Iron Man, Star-Lord, Thor, Spider-Man or even Black Widow. I know they tried, they really tried to be a big deal.
But to give a credit, the story is rather fascinated, the presentation (minus the use of digital de-age which sometimes it looks nice, but other times kinda poor) and the action are pretty good and outside of Carol, the other characters are interesting, along with Nick Fury, Talos, Korah and Mar-Vell.
Even though Carol Danvers might be powerful, but aren't as good enough then rest on the list. Which makes a good reason why it was lower on the list.
Number 11: The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
During the time before several studios wants to cashing to making their toy movies based on toy brands, The Lego Movie is the most groundbreaking film for not just moviegoers, but also the fans/collectors of Lego. For me, i love Lego since i was a kid, even though im only stick to Hot Wheels, but i still like Lego, specially since i remembered playing with "Lego Dimensions" (May R.I.P....)
So successful in fact that they made a sequel. Which after we had a cliffhanging ending from the first film, you think that they'll expanding the world and series in the world of Lego and becoming "Super-Cool" of this movie? Well... Its yes and no.
The plot is about Emmett's friends are taken away from Sweet Mayhem to the Systar System with Princess Watevra Wa'Nabi where he has to save them with his new partner Rex Dangervest (aka a badass hero with many of Chris Pratt's refence). It feels like a typical escort mission that i find it to be pretty weak of the story.
Despite of weak writing of the plot, but it was fun with humors, the animation is still look good with use of CG to pretending to be a stop-motion based on Lego's movements, it looks amazing with sets, bright and colorful, the songs are good and the characters fascination (even if Emmett is pretty much like the original by thinking "Nah, this is fine").
Sadly, due to the low performance at the box-office (but at least its not a flopped film), Warner Bros are calling quit when their rights of Lego is expired and leaving Universal Pictures owned the rights to make their own, despite they kept the spin-off projects that are still in development.
Despite the movie's being overshadowed and a under-performance of box-office, lets hope for the best with Universal Pictures with Lego license in the future.
Number 10: Fighting with my Family
As a fan of wrestling, i've been fascinating with all the matches, some memorable pro-wrestlers, some intense actions and even the stories. However, we always like to figure "What if there's a movie with wrestler's origin?", which is exactly what we have with "Fighting with my Family".
Based on memoir by Paige herself, this movie is basically like the 2008 film "The Wrestler", but only more of based of true story with Saraya Knight (but her real name is Saraya Bevis), better known as Paige who's trained to joining WWE before she became a history to becoming WWE Diva Champion in Monday Night RAW after Wrestlemania XXX. Its pretty fascinating to see her as a real life underdog to rising herself for not just her dream, but for her family as well. The presentation with wrestling matches are fun to watch, the characters based on real people (or not) are pretty good whether they care for Paige or in rival.
However, like Bohemian Rhapsody, even though its a fun movie, but it doesn't mean that its perfect. For example, the character's look may or may not look fitting (such as AJ Lee, whcih in real life, she looks a lot younger than wrestler/actress Zelina Vega who played the movie version), some wrestling matches could be a little bit flawed, some name change like aforementioned Paige's real name, some characters are taking too seriously at Paige and some of moments of Paige is missing, like they cut where she's been in NTX show where she won the NXT Woman's championship.
Even though it may not as perfect to follow her true story, but at least they tried for our favorite British female wrestler in WWE, even though she kept wrestling before she retired in 2018 to preventing her painful injury. Even though its shame that retired, but hey, she had a nice run, for the time... And final note, its rather nice to see The Rock in the movie too.
Number 9: Joker
Though MCU's Captain Marvel wasn't as memorable for a development, but Joker on the other hand is quite disturbing and violent.
The movie's re-origin of The Joker is actually a pretty good that we have a man who has a mental problem for his uncontrollable laughter involving deaths or others instead of falling in the pool of acid like we've seen in the comics and on the screen. Its no secret that they wanted to be realistic for a mental issue to leaving him becoming the prince of crime.
The story is rather fascinating to go from his clown and comedian career falling apart to becoming a memorable crime that we all know, especially for following the direction, along with the presentation. Though to movie doesn't have a lot of actions, but the action scenes are rather brutal that is almost like a realistic occurring crime, even if most people didn't like about the use of violent, but as a sick person with blood, im ok with it.
However, the reason why it was on number 9, is that the movie is taking a long while before we get to the brutal fight, though i know the movie is focus on the plot of the research and Arthur (pre-Joker) dealing with his life in good side to having a girlfriend or even confronting over Wayne's family. But again, it was rather slow to watch.
Even though it maybe flawed, but it has a reputation for a first R-Rated superhero movie with billion dollars and lets hope for something promising with DC Black universe.
Number 8: Pokemon: Detective Pikachu
As we know, we originally have two movie based on video games like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, but i think we can all agree that Detective Pikachu has a good start, while Sonic had a nightmare look from the first trailer, which is no wonder why it got delayed.
But for Detective Pikachu, it looks a lot much more promising for world building (sometimes) and Pokemons look. Like im very appreciated how they executed presentation in the world of Pokemon, unlike any other crappy video game movies that they look loosely stupid. Though it was not just based on the main focus of Pokemon, it was mainly based on the spin-off game with a same name. Though i never played it and heard the game is pretty boring, but i think this movie much more fun than the game itself. And of course, the acting is somewhat, while the humans are raging from good to a bit questionable of acting ability like Justice Smith as Tim Goodman (despite he's sorta a well-written character), but we can all agree that Detective Pikachu himself was easily stole the spotlight for his sense of humor and fun performance of the same actor who played Deadpool.
However, the reason why it was low, its just that even the story is somewhat good, but its just plain formulaic, its basically a typical solving the mysterious case with Pokemon, where Detective Pikachu is suffered amnesia to figure out who he is and find out about Tim's father's disappearance. Like it almost like the same curse of formulaic as the first Deadpool movie. Which if we have a typical detective movie, why can't we could give more plot element like how to train Pokemon where Tim's friend Lucy helping him for becoming a Pokemon trainer, despite in business of detective. But, it does sorta have original for how there's a purple smoke that causes a temporary disease to casuing Pokemon into berserk.
Even if its not the most perfect movie based on video game, but at least they have their effort for the presentation, the knowledge of Pokemon and some fun characters.
Number 7: Spider-Man Far from Home
Like i said early, we've expecting that Carol Danvers will be the likable hero in MCU, but ended up in a weak execution, otherwise in the words of Tony Stark "If you're nothing without the suit, then you shouldn't have it...!". But with Spidey in MCU, he'll always never disappoints.
As we all know, it picks up after Endgame where Spider-Man has no choice but to be himself while on a trip in Europe without getting too much depressing when his mentor Tony Stark sacrificed himself. And of course, the movie does have a new character like Mysterio. The movie is rather fascinating at the time for once again, the costumes, the action, lovable casts and the presentation of effects.
But the reason why i put this at number 7, its just that although Mysterio might have been a fascinating character, but his twist just comes off as unfair that he's involving the fake Elementals and faking his power with Stark Industries drone for his revenge when he got fired. Like i though the Elementals looks pretty cool that maybe they could be real, but Quentin Beck (Mysterio) is involved for his stunt to be a big deal.
Even if the movie is good, but im considering to be not as greater as "Spider-Man Homecoming", im sorry to say, the whole twist of Mysterio just kinda frustrated me.
Number 6: Godzilla: King of the monsters
Not let me start off by saying that, yes, this movie is bellow average based on the critics and some movie goers, but as a fan of Kaiju, i'd say its not as bad some of 70's Godzilla or the godawful 1998 version.
The story itself is pretty fascinating where it show us, with five years after Gdozilla killing off MUTOs (sorta), the government are order to building the organization facility called "Monarch", in order to do a research if there's more than one Kaijus. Oh im sorry, i mean "Titans" (Yeah, i don't like what they called, but im still stick to calling "Kaiju", dammit!).
Though i like the setting of a potential Kaijus anywhere around the world, but as we all know, Godzilla (and maybe Kong), there are three new monsters that are born such as Mothra, Rodan and of course, King Ghidorah. With the exception MUTO who's unexpectedly return, they even introducing new Kaijus by Legendary like Behemoth (Who's a giant mammoth), Scylla (a monster looks like a cross between Kumonga and Cthulhu) and Methuselah (a giant turtle-like with mountain). Even though i like they brought back our familiar Toho monsters, while the non-Toho monsters are rather fascinating. However, there are two monsters are unable to be in the movie such as Gigan and Kumonga, its disappointed, because these guys deserve another chance to come back. The action, the effects and the lighting are much more cooler and colorful to watch, which this film easily fixed the issue from Godzilla 2014.
Even though the story with the Monarch is pretty good, but its no safe when it comes to the human plot. With the exception of Dr. Serizawa that i considered him as a fascinating character, the human plot about a confrontation between Monarch and the terrorist when it comes to survival with the Kaijus, and especially that the whole family is just plain stupid and the use of Oxygen Destroyer at Godzilla is not only unfair, but also way too early to inventing it to ruining our king of Kaiju.
Even though not a lot of people didn't like the human plot and some cheap element, but at least its a good Kaiju film that i considered recommended for Kaiju fans like me.
Number 5: Frozen 2
Frozen is no secret to be one of the most popular around the community, we love the setting, the animation, the humor and of course, the lovable characters of the series that it became with shorts. With the sequel, although its a welcome return what we've waiting for, but like always, its not as perfect.
The idea expanding the world in Frozen is a pretty good idea what we like to see outside of Arendelle with Enchanted forest and Ahtohallan, im very appreciated for the expending the world, the animation is still looks great like before from the background designs, the effects from spirits, the musicals and the animation of the characters. The characters are always enjoyable what we care and rooting for, especially with Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff and Sven.
However the reason why i never put this one into podium is that the story is disappointing where we go, its about our heroes follow the mysterious voice where Elsa heard, thinking about something went wrong in Enchanted forest with missing soldiers and the chaos from the spirits. And of course, the movie also include the mystery of the fifth element that i find it a cliche choice that its been done before. The movie also has a subplot where Kristoff wants to marrying with Anna just comes off as out place and possibly predictable from beginning to end.
Even though this is not what we wanted for Frozen 2, but at least Disney tried for our support.
Number 4: Toy Story 4
I know im might gonna hurt any Pixar fans out there when i put this in number 4 on my list, but just hear me out, please?
For starter, when we heard that Toy Story 4 was announced, we had no idea why Pixar wanted to make another one, which we believe that they're gonna milking their series of Toy Story. But when the movie came out, man it was a rollercoaster ride of emotion.
The story about Woody and his gang living in their new life from new owner Bonnie after Andy give his toys away is kinda nice, until we witness our new toy named Forky who's always believe in trash than toys, which is up to Woody and perhaps one of his friend are helping to save Forky without causing concern for Bonnie. However, once they brought back Bo Peep, things get interesting since after her absence from Toy Story 3, which we were concern for by Bo is gone. Like im bery appreciated that they brought her back based on our concern and perhaps a plothole from before. I mean seeing a reunion between Woody and Bo is welcome return and this is something that you don't cry. And don't give me started on the ending, because if you wanna know, watch the whole movie and hope you don't get too depressed like i do, even though i didn't cry while watching it.
Aside a well-written story and good humor, the animation is once again, a wonderful upgrade for more locations, the lighting, colors, the designs and even animation of the toys themselves. The characters has been change since previous films that we grew up and we always love them, especially for the return of Bo Peep, even the voice acting is always enjoyable.
But like i said, the reason why i put this at number 4, its because since we had a perfect way to end at Toy Story 3, i find it rather unnecessary when they made a 4th one, cause i like to having the 3rd one is enough and live happily ever after, but since 20% fans and Pixar think it wasn't perfect enough, they have to make another, but in the end, despite my nitpick, i enjoy the movie, but don't get a shed of tears if you wanna watch this movie.
Number 3: Shazam!
Well, that must be a big surprise for DCEU film.
After a lot of films that are very disappointed to badly (Minus Wonder Woman, Aquaman and maybe Suicide Squad), when we heard about they're making a film about Shazam, we were not so sure if its gonna be good, but in reality, it never disappoints us.
The story is rather well-written from beginning to end, where Thaddeus Sivana was mysteriously went into Rock of Eternity to meet an ancient wizard named "Shazam" for a pure heart, but Thaddeus is ended up being unworthy when he release the Seven Deadly Sins in order to gets his revenge. Meanwhile in present time, we have Billy Batson, a boy who lost his mother that he was adopted by the foster family with other kids who're lost too, including his best pal Freddy Freeman. However, after being chased by the stranger, he was transported that he chosen by the same ancient wizard to give Billy power by calling the name "Shazam!" to becoming a superhero thanks to Thaddeus who broke free the sins.
I admitted, im very appreciated for the story (despite a typical superhero story) for not just well-written, but also for a fun dialogue having fun with it to giving a sense of humor and a lighter tone. But of course, the action scenes, the costume and of course, the characters that we love and care, especially with Billy Batson, which at first i never heard nor care about Billy, but with this movie, Billy Batson/Shazam is probably my new favorite DC superhero, especially some other characters who're also likable like Freddy Freeman, since he's an enthusiasts of superheroes.
Even though DCEU is in bad shape, but with Shazam's success, maybe this will be DCEU's redemption for their future film, even if they could do a reboot like Suicide Squad. Aw well, only time will tell.
Number 2: Ford V Ferrari
From before, i remember seeing Rush in 2013 and i enjoyed it. But when it comes to Ford V Ferrari, this one is even more fun and entertaining to watch, as a fan of Motorsport.
Unlike Rush which is about the famous rivalry between James Hunt and the recent late Niki Lauda (R.I.P., three times champ) in Formula 1, this one is about the set between Ford and Shelby to building their own LM car that'll change the world in 24 hours of Le Mans in 1966, the story has a nice way to introduce for their origin, whether is Ford Motor Company are losing employees since they got rejected from Ferrari for the deal, Carroll Shelby was forced for being retired of racing and becoming an owner of his own motor company and Ken Miles being a struggling mechanic for his racing.
Even though there are maybe some moments was missing, but i enjoyed the story for building up the car, the karma plan to beat Ferrari and lot of things that we can't wait to see for the main event like Le Mans. The presentation looks amazing for taking place in the 60's with a lot of old fashion stuff, especially if you're one of fan of car looks like me. Speaking of cars, the racing scenes are enjoyable to watch and nicely depicted for chasing the lead as hard as possible, the strategy decision and it feels like a real race to watch, which we can agree that the racing sequences are the highlights of this film. Not to mention, even the characters are pretty fascinated too, especially for the chemistry between Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles for working together for test the car and the strategy, although there are some that i do like at the time.
This movie based on the real racing is enjoyable to watch from the set up the concept car, the racing sequences, the presentation and a wonderful casts. And last but not least is, at least it looks fun and better than "Driven".
And now... The number 1 movie of the year i've ever watch goes to...!
Number 1: Avengers Endgame
This one is not only the improvement from "Infinity War", but this is easily the biggest film ever we've ever saw, but in not just good, it is the most perfect film i've ever watch, i can't help to tell how i love this movie after three hours...!
As we know, it picks up right after Infinity War (along with mid-credit of Captain Marvel), where our remaining heroes of Avengers are trying to tracking down Thanos to bring back, but was already too late. Five years later, Scott Lang (aka Ant-Man) is asking the remains of the Avengers for asking what is happening (since he was trapped in Ant-Man and The Wasp) and looking for help to bring everything back, by time traveling of course! Unlikely at first, but its up to them to go back and get the Infinity Stones without being noticed by pre-Infinity War Thanos.
Even though its somewhat ridiculous at first, but honestly, i think its rather fascinating to watch and rooting for, especially that it makes give us a nostalgia a bit where our heroes traveled to the movies that remembered before like "Avengers", "Guardians of the Galaxy" and the not-so good one "Thor: The Dark World". The presentation is once again, looks amazing for the effects, the costumes, colorful quality and as always, the action scenes are outstanding. But of course, the characters are lovable, even though they've been changed after failing to seeking Thanos with Infinity Stones, we always like to rooting our heroes to bring the half livings back (especially the dead members of Avengers). But of course, the acting and the dialogue are also enjoyable whether we love and cry in the same time.
And i should mention that having a big battle with the Infinity Stones along with our remaining heroes resurrecting was a huge surprised, emotional and exciting to watch. Like when i saw it in theater, i was goosebumps to watch for an epic war. And especially the end of war, the way it ended is one helluva climatic and depressing, like where Tony sacrificed to using his Infinity Stones to destroy the evil force and Thanos for his final straw before he died.
But of course, this film is not just the biggest, but it became a recent changing history, mainly the box-office, since we're always pumping up for Endgame, the movie was quickly became the highest grossing film quickly and most importantly, the movie beat James Cameron's Avatar with more than $2.798 billion over Avatar's $2.79 billion, making Avengers Endgame is the current Number 1 highest-grossing film of all time.
As a fan of superhero, comics and even Marvel, i love the movie for fascinating story, wonderful presentation, epic actions, it was funny, beloved characters (for the most part a bit) and enjoyable acting for some of them one last time. I love it so much that i considered a best movie to watch, especially with the perfect way to end of "The Infinity saga". And that is why i considered "Avengers Endgame" as the number 1 best film of 2019 i've ever watch...!
So this ends of my final countdown of 2019, but got any other best films that i miss, let me know at the comment bellow.
If you guys have your opinion or any suggestions, let me know at comment bellow and support me on KO-FI.com/blackevil.
Thanks for reading and il see you next time to checking the movies of 2020. And as always, im Anthony, signing out.
