Hey everyone, my name is Anthony and welcome back to the countdown.
2017 movies are rather more than average. We have some good movies that are promising that went good. But others are easily fall flat for the potential.
From before, i made my list movies that are average to forgettable that didn't make on my main list. Go check it out if you want. https://blackevil915.deviantart.com/journal/Honorable-Dishonorable-mention-movies-of-2017-722528009
So, i pick 10 movies that i liked when i watched. Like i said before from my "Honorable/Dishonorable mention list", i have to start to "meh" to "Wow" movies for my appeal. And some movies like "The Founder" and "Sings" didn't count, because both of them came out last year since i watched them in this year.
But, if some of your favorite movie didn't make on my list, let me known the comment bellow.
So lets get started, shall we?
Number 10: Ghost in the shell 2017
This one may or may not have potential, due to the obvious controversies that i don't know why people complain for nothing. Like, im ok to have Scarlett Johansson as "Major Kusanagi", because race doesn't matter when she's a cyborg of anti-terrorist group called "Section 9". So stop take the blame over the movie with desperate attention to have Asian actor, they'll never listen and they'll doing best for their business, whether its good or bad.
Despite the "whitewashing" is like a salt on my wound, the movie may looks cool with impressive design of the city, great action and the acting are pretty good. But the story is rather average of confusion, some characters are forgettable for no development and having a name change to our hero Motoko Kusanagi to "Mira Killian" is just plain stupid. Like the movie would've been better without the naming "Ghost in the Shell", it would've been some kind of anthology or a spin-off the series. Kinda like "Halloween 3" ,which it was originally to be a sequel from two previous movies, but changed to anthology film, but not that good.
Anyway, i like the movie, but not as great that i'd rather throw it away for honorable mention, it makes my reason to put on Number 10, because at least the production and action scene looks great. Unlike "Death Note Netflix", which is a big fat flop to me... (And no, i still didn't subscribe Netflix... ^^;)
Number 9: Cars 3
The first movie had a potential, but it ended up as above average movie, i like it, but understandably a bit boring, Cars 2 is Pixar's biggest weakest film they've ever done which im glad i didn't watch.
And here we have another one which we don't know why we have another, but it ended up to a shocking potential we saw a teaser. Ever since they released the teaser, we were very concerned about our main hero Lightning McQueen, is he dead or incredibly wounded?
Well, when the movies came out, i think i can agree its pretty good than two previous movie, what i know the racing is getting a new level with hybrid cars much like in real life races like F1, where McQueen been a veteran racer, he was struggling win the race against the big rookie named "Jackson Storm". Even though the story feels a bit the same as the first one, but they add the drama for the reason why McQueen is getting old for his racing career over the years. I understand that, but it focused too much on him, despite we introduce a new protagonist named Cruz Ramirez, which i think she's easily likable on the movie, since she dreamed to be a racer, but lack of confident.
The story is pretty good, the animation looks much like before but update and some characters are interesting, but some are either forgettable or even useless. I like first and three and i still hate the second one. Oh well, i can't wait when Pixar made a sequel of "The Incredibles" next year.
Number 8: The Lego Batman movie
When i first saw it, i find it an average movie which it would've been good. But looking back at it, i can understand a why many people love this movie.
Its not just about Batman, the villains or the jokes, its more about family that we sympathize our main hero behind the mask. I mean, we all know how he seeks revenge for his parents get killed from the gunshot. Its almost like we introduce Batman for kids with Lego in nowadays.
The animations looks pretty cool for a CG stopmotion and perhaps a 2D drawing for the expression of the faces. The voice acting and some characters are enjoyable to watch. Though sometimes the jokes was either work or not its either done before or not. But some character is the weakest is The Joker voiced by Zach Galifianakis, i know that we've comparing who's the best Joker, but for Zach's role of Batman's nemesis, i don't think it works for his role and probably forgettable like Jared Leto's role in Suicide Squad.
But hey, at least this movie make on my list that its better than "The Lego Ninjago Movie".
Number 7: Beauty and the beast 2017
The 1991 Beauty and the Beast are one of the most ground breaking Disney film ever done, this is the Renaissance era that we all know and love with other films like "Aladdin", "Hercules", "The Lion King" and the one that started all, "The Little Mermaid". And before you ask, yes i watched the 1991 version before the remake in this year from my television.
Anyway, after the live-action "The Jungle Book" was success, they decided to going back to the second live-action Disney princess, this time with Belle.
The movie itself is trying to be like the original, but it was a mix. The story is pretty much before with extra elements that i like or not, the production and designs looks not bad (Even though the Beast's looks is above average), the characters are not bad, but not as fresh than before, though Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Ewan McGregor and Ian McKellen did a nice work for their roles. As for the songs, they're pretty good, but once again, not as fresh than before.
And of course, i had a rant about a characters relationship of Gaston and LeFou, because many people criticized for a gay character, which i was very pissed for homophobic. But some are defending him for the support of LGBT, but the damage was already done with some theaters outside US and Canada were banned for same reason. However, i heard Disney is gonna make another Disney princess with LGBT, so maybe it'll be interesting?
Whether you love or hate it, this is a remake that i may enjoy it.
Number 6: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
After two years from "The Force Awakens" we finally get to see how's going on for Rey and Luke Skywalker, and the result, it was a big disappointment for the fans like me.
The plot is probably turning into a flip-flop whether we focus on Rey's training with Luke or perhaps a cheap subplot where Finn and his female partner trying to find a Codebreaker about the tracking device that went never happen in the third act. Not only that, but some of the characters are probably "turning away" that it focused on Rey, Luke, Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, Snoke(?) and maybe Finn.
But, at least some of the actions and production looks fantastic like before, like an interesting location choice for "Ahch-To" and "Crait". (except for Porg, they're annoying me) Even though some characters turned forgettable, but some that i liked. Not only that, which as i stated before, this considered to be the final film with Carrie Fisher when she died after completing her acting.
It may not be successful, but its a not bad movie that i watched. But like i said, hope for the better in Ep. 9.
Number 5: Wonder Woman
After three DCEU films went bad, the DC fans (including me) are begging to see a good DCU film in the big screen. As a result, they finally done better.
The story it pretty much what you expect, its basically an origin for how Princess Diana was born in her home island of Amazon and became a powerful warrior known as "Wonder Woman" and leaving her island to facing at World War 1. I know its simple yes, but at least it has a good development.
The action scene are fantastic to look for her gears and her ability, the production looks descent like Wonder Woman's out and the appearance of the villain Ares. The filming location looks and fit nicely which again, it takes place on WWI. some characters are pretty good to see, especially it has a development with Diana and Steve Trevor. But the downside is that some characters like the Amazons have only appeared in the first act, which i wish if they could've make a bit more to feel how Diana's going.
It would've good to be higher in my list, but some other Superhero movies done good than this one. No offense DC fans...
Number 4: Spider-man Homecoming
This one is difficult that i wanted to picked it up in the podium, but i had to drop it to 4 with some flaws.
But, its actually an interesting Spider-man movie in MCU with great actions, production, a nice costume appearance (except Iron Man's suit in this movie) and enjoyable acting.
For the story its about where Peter Parker is like an apprentice to become an upcoming member of The Avengers, he is a young hero to save the neighbors and perhaps busy in school. Even though i know its another question who's a better role of Superhero movie like Batman. For me, though Tobey Maguire's role is great one that i remembered when i was young and Andrew Garfield is rather above average to "meh...". As for Tom Holland in nowadays, i think it fits in as a teenage boy turned into hero from radioactive spider. And the villain, Adrian Toomes/ Vulture is a likable villain, which at first he's started as an innocent man with Parker, but other times he want him to die as a "Vulture" and Michael Keaton is surprising, which after after nearly thirty years of his role of Batman, he reversed himself as a villain, but he's still doing a great job for his role. While Iron Man is there, but im pretty he's more like as a mentor, but still Robert Downey Jr. is still doing great job.
But the downside is that some other characters are despite some are good, but otheres are rather fleshed out, especially with Zendaya as "The Not Mary Jane", aka Michelle Jones. I mean, they would've give a development, but they're just there. But except for Peter's gamer buddy named "Ned", he's rather interesting one.
Spider-Man Homecoming, It may not be "Amazing", but its still great to see our friendly neighborhood back on the big screen with MCU. Twice...
Number 3: Thor: Ragnarok
Yup, another MCU film in my list, but this time in podium.
As a third installment of Thor, this one is easily superior than two previous, which it got changed to have fun, as Chris Hemsworth admitted that its getting stale after previous films he's ever role as Thor that he wanted to change for experiments with Kevin Feige. As a result, it worked well.
The story is pretty good that i can tell, which i can accept for the change, Thor lost his mighty Mjolnir by Hela and he was taken to the prison on Sakaar in order to find the way back home to dealing against Hela. And the subplot where The Incredible Hulk is back in the arena that i was very surprised that he's returned since The Avengers and Mark Ruffalo returned to playing as big green machine.
Once again, the action scene are awesome, especially the third act or even the arena scene with Thor vs Hulk. The production is outstanding for the designs of the suits, the background and motion capture as well.
It was a great sequel that it earned the spot in podium.
Number 2: Coco
Back then, its not easy to tell if its good or bad after the release of "Book of life" or perhaps debatable for cultures whether its ok to release the movie or not, with the result... This film was succeed!
For the story is about Miguel where he was dreamed to be a musician, but his family don't let him do that because of bad past from the divorce. However when he went to the cemetery to playing a guitar, he was accidentally transported into the land of the dead, despite he meets his dead parents in the land, he wanted to see his great-great-grandfather about the song and perhaps hang out or something.
I find the story itself is well-written and emotional which we understand that we wish that we can reunite our past parents that we will never forget in our memory. The animation by Pixar did a great job for the colorful background and creative designs of deceased people in the land of the dead. Which they claimed that animating a skeleton character is a difficult level for the lack of muscle system for their different form, but they did an effort work. The music in the movie is pretty good to listening, especially if you like to listening with mariachi band.
And yes, before that, we have "Olaf's Frozen Adventure", which although its good, but geez, 21 minutes before this movie? How they thought will be a good idea for this? It was annoying and wasted that Disney had to removing it and put on TV special, which it deserves it. than put it in the film.
Anyway, the film itself was great, but it didn't make on number one for specific reason. This one may be "The best film of 2017", no no no... It was easily considered as "The best animated film of 2017", i love it for emotional story, good characters, colorful animation and the Mexicans will love it as well.
And now, my Number 1 best film of 2017 was...
Number 1: Logan
This one is not only considered as the "best film" or even "Best superhero" film of the year, but its also a dedication for our favorite actor who played Wolverine for the last time after 17 years with nine films. (Even though i haven't seen some of Wolverine films, but i watched some clips but pretty good and promised.)
For the story, its more about a life to death to Logan where he's getting old and his healing ability that he lives with Caliban and his mentor Charles Xavier who's having a brain disease to causing a seizure for losing his control of his mind ability, leaving Logan, Caliban and Professor X all alone as the last X-Men. But they meet Laura to keep her safe according to a former nurse Gabriela Lopez before she was killed. Its up to Logan has to take care Laura from Donald Pierce and his group Reavers.
The story itself although its simple, but it also give emotional ride that like i said, Logan has going to be in serious time before his death to keep Laura, because without his healing ability and his dying age, it will be tragedy for our hero. The production is fantastic (no pun attended) for action, the abilities and the effects. The filming location are beautiful and interesting choice for the safe location or even action scene. The characters are likable and well developed, especially for great acting like Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, Boyd Holbrook and few others.
And as we all know that i mentioned before (But Spoiler!!!), this was considered to be final film where Jackman playing as Wolverine and also possibly the final role of Stewart as Charles Xavier, which both of them died peacefully and emotionally. I mean when i saw them died, i bowed my head in sad which i understand for their final role, they deserve to be killed off and moving on.
With emotional story, great action scene with Rated R for violence and sympathetic character that we love back then, this film made my good reason to be on number 1 best film of 2017...
I hope you guys don't cry at the end of my countdown, because man, it was emotional ending that i wrote.
Well, so this ends of my countdown, because next year, il finish my top list of video games of the year. And for the good moments of 2017, i decided to scrap it for my difficult thoughts.
