Top 12 movies of the year 2022

Hey everyone, my name is Anthony and welcome back to the countdown.

Last time, I covered 5 of the worst movies I’ve ever watch in 2022, which is im glad that il never looking back nor talking about them ever again. Now we’re in the second part of my countdown, this time lets have some good movies what I’ve watched.

Like I said at the end, I gathered 12 movies, from above average to the best as usual.

So, get rather to gathering around to see the list to concluding this year, because this, is my Top 12 Movies of the year 2022.

So lets get started, shall we?

Number 12: Catwoman Hunted
Lets start off with my very first take of DC’s direct-to-video universe, cause im always like to talking about movies in theaters, but this is the one I want to start due to the annoyance of the pandemic.

Like I said before, it wasn’t the first Catwoman film that she got her own, the 2004 version with Halle Berry was easily the worst one I’ve ever seen from clips and the story, but that’s a different story.

While its nice to have Catwoman got her own animated movie without Batman, but at least its the first Catwoman’s animated movie, in DTV. The animation looks pretty good for the character designs and some of the backgrounds modern Gotham City, even it has some nice pick of the characters like Catwoman is forced to work with Batwoman and Interpol to dealing with Leviathan with Black Skull and Barbara Minerva.

However, what makes this film in a lower list is the lack of development of what the villain’s purpose, they’re just typically a group of bad guys trying to sabotaging Gotham City, while Catwoman is gotta work with Batwoman to stop them without causing trouble since you know, Selina Kyle loves to do her cat burglary. Mainly for getting Cat’s Eye Emerald, for Catwoman’s usual goal.
While I love the animation with the characters and the actions, but I can definitely see some limitations, but not in a good way like the CG looks pretty bad for the use of car chase and noticeable lip-sync, which I just wish if they could’ve verify some botched part before releasing both digitally and physically.

While its not Catwoman’s best film, but at least they tried, and still better than the 2004 version…!

Number 11: Nope
Im easily nothing against Jordan Peele, he’s a great as both actor and a filmmaker for giving us a fascinating stories and the message of social commentary. When it comes to this movie, its not as perfect as some of his like Get Out.

Il give a credit what they’re trying for his idea from a man unlikely working with tomboy playful girl with history of horse riding from filming back then, while some character development could’ve gone better, but the cast are good to be there, the presentation looks good, even the UFO called “Jean Jacket” has a unique twist throughout the movie.

However, the reasons why its so lower on this list is the writing could’ve gone better with some confusing moments and one character’s origin that while disturbing, but has nothing to do with the plot about the UFO, and despite the effort of the effect, the chimpanzee looks obviously cheap in CG that I get its the save their budget for overspending like bring out a real chimpanzee, but come on, is this the best they brought up with?

Even though its not Jordan Peele’s perfect movie, but il give a credit what he’s trying about the UFO with unique twist.

Number 10: Lightyear
Hey kids, are you familiar with Toy Story when Buzz Lightyear is acting like a real deal without realizing he’s a toy as Woody warns him? Well, I remember it a lot as a kid, but what if you have a movie in polar opposite that we have a REAL Buzz Lightyear? Well, surely Pixar did in their mind for the spin-off.

Its quite nice for having movie about Lightyear that he cares so much his main mission for testing a ship for hyperspace, but struggled many times, as well as dealing with the rookies like Izzy who’s Alisha’s granddaughter for following her footstep, Darby being used of conviction parole for defense force and Mo being an idiot if he can learn. Even though the rookies are flawed, but they have some respect for chemistry and some humor for the most part,, like Sox the robot cat with Buzz. The action scenes are pretty good to watch, since I can agree that the actions are the highlight for this movie.

However, the major downside is that despite the effort for the action, the quality and some good characters, the writing is problematic from some poorly written that the plot is all over the place, some characters could’ve gone better, questionable directions and I maybe agree that despite Chris Evans did a good job to playing as Buzz, but would’ve been good if Tim Allen (the original voice of Buzz) coming to playing the main character one more.

It has a good idea of this movie, but we just wish if it could’ve gone better for its writing and such others. And yes, despite it has more than $226.4M over the budget of $200M, it got flopped at the box office due to a combination of foreshadowed by one movie that we’ll get there, being a spin-off that no-one ever expected and probably the homophobia when Alisha is in relationship with other woman (Ain’t the society great again?).

Its a flawed, but had a good idea, even if I put this on Number 10 spot.

Number 9: Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers
Unlike Lightyear that had a poor performance at the box-office for various reason, Chip N’Dale on the other hand, it deserves to be nice and comfortable in Disney+, sure it does released on theaters in several countries that they didn’t have Disney+, which is understandable, sure, but again, this movie is comfy on streaming.

If you’re familiar with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, well, imagine the more modern version of it, but with Chip and Dale for their life changing with meta-commentary. Which I appreciated for the idea of the life changing between Chip and Dale since their good’ol days of their show “Chip N’Dale Rescue Rangers”, I never watch this show (perhaps if I will, as a subscriber of Disney+), but at least its nice for the film’s idea, while its all about a reunion attempt, but the we have a second plot involving the group of bootleggers for their kidnapping, which is meant to regaining the friendship between Chip and Dale not only a reunion since their show, but also going back to Rescue Rangers fashion, even though its not as perfect, but il give a credit what they’re trying. The characters are quite fascinating and fun in order to invest and even a self-aware of various movies and cartoons with meta elements, even the presentation is also great as a crossover movie.

However, while I love this film’s idea, but its just the presentation easily overshadowing the plot, the message or even writing, its easily made with butt-load of distractions of Easter Eggs, I mean I get it, I love doing Easter Eggs to see many familiar characters, but its just that we want to focus on the story and such. The writing itself that, while its best effort, but its not as perfect, from two plots that its either solving a case or regaining friendship to trying to investing the characters. Meanwhile, the humors are easily above average from either didn’t get it, a chuckle to laughing out loud for their execution.

Its not the best crossover film, but at least il give a credit what they’re trying, especially with the collaboration with The Lonely Island.

Number 8: Elvis
After years that we have Bohemian Rhapsody that its about Freddy Mercury and Rocket Man about Sir Elton John, its definitely no stranger to having a movie about Elvis Presley, after all, he was the King of Rock N’ Roll, whether you love or hate him.

The movie itself looks pretty impressive for taking place both 50’s to 60’s, for the quality the set and even the music itself, whether its done with cover to be sounds similar to Elvis (kinda like Marc Martel that he has an incredible voice similar to Freddie Mercury) or pretty much lip-syncing Elvis’s song from the 60s, which I wish if its done by actual voice for you know, doing a cover rather than reusing Elvis’s song in the movie. Even they did a good job for the music, but some remixes just don’t match in a movie based on Elvis’s life and career, as well as, like any movies based on true story, some moments are missing that they probably forgot to including like say, during Elvis’s military or even his movie career.

Despite of flaws, while the story is nicely written for the most part, the characters are quite nice too, along with some surprising cast, especially with a chemistry between Tom Hanks’ Colonel Tom Parker (when in reality, his name is Andreas Cornelis van Kujik, since he’s from Netherlands) and Austin Butler’s Elvis Presley. Even though its sorta brief, but both Hanks and Butler did a great work for their roles that il give a credit, especially Hanks deserves a lot better than one of the worst Disney’s live-action remake that came out at the same year, but I digress.

While its flawed with questionable remixes and missing elements, but at least its nice to have a movie based on Elvis himself. “Thank you, thank you very much”.

Number 7: The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Now this is gonna be fascinating, after all, I’ve been waited for so long that I eventually reviewed a movie with Nicolas Cage, is it worth it? Well, probably think so.

Unlike the previous entry its a true story, this one is more fictional, which im cool with it, even if though it was meant to be a redemption of Nick Cage, but then again, true or fiction, its fine.

For the story, its more about the struggling to recovering his career to going in Spain (or Croatia, based on their film-making), which is kinda odd, but its more like a deal for not just a vacation, but also meet a rich fanboy who likes to helping Cage to recover his career based on a combination of midlife crisis with some drink and neglectful to his fictional wife and kid, even though the movie has a secondary plot that the CIA told Cage whether or not the rich fanboy has a connection of the crime group for child kidnapping.

While I appreciated for the writing, but the story is fascinating or kinda odd for say the least, the humor is either hit or miss where sometimes some other actors trying to be funny (minus Pedro Pascal, I think he did a fun work of his role), but Cage easily took his overacting that like any of Cage’s movies, they’re either funny or scary depending of his look, his move or he typical shouting.

The action scenes are pretty good, but it was sadly only shown in the third act from the plot twist, which il admit its a fun action, but I just wish if they could’ve give us a little more action shoot’em ups in a whole movie, just saying. But as far as I know, its more of a chemistry between Cage and Pascal’s character, which il admit, they have a nice relation together even though Cage is forced to work with CIA for, again, whether or not Pedro’s character involved with the crime or not.

While its kinda odd, but its a fine more with Nicholas Cage, but like at Number 10, the movie got flopped, but this film’s box-office is much lower than $30M, that’s a yikes…! Aw well, at least its a fun movie for say the least, but not one of Cage’s best movie.

Number 6: Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Now originally, I wanna put it lower when I worked on my countdown, but looking back, maybe il put it a bit higher cause honestly, I think I have to agree with the community that this is rather an improvement over the first one, sure its not as perfect as always, but at least its an improvement.

Unlike the previous film that its more of generic human and different creature’s buddy adventure to hiding himself from Dr. Robotnik, this one is more like a video game story as we know. Mainly, where Sonic and Tails working together finding the Master Emerald from Dr. Robotnik is going after it with his unlikely new henchman Knuckles the Echidna. Again, its not hard to know why the story is an improvement over the first one.

The action scenes are pretty fun to go with the battle and the chase with Sonic and Tails fighting against Robotnik, as well as Sonic tells Knuckles tells him to not trusting the villain like the mad scientist to taking Master Emerald for his will than keeping it safe.

While I appreciated some some characters (like Tails, Knuckles and of course, Jim Carrey’s Robotnik), but the movie has a same problem like mixed jokes (mainly Jim Carrey is always a funny actor for his over-the-top comedic role and some like Sonic feels like he’s still trying but with the same immature jokes), the pacing is questionable and the writing, while its their best effort to make it more like a video game story, it still has some problematic writing.

Aw well, but at least we can enjoy this movie for its improvement and a big surprise of mid-credit for the 3rd installment (not gonna tell you what) and Paramount are planning to make a spin-off featuring Knuckles. Only time will tell, unless if Sonic will fighting against Mario for modern movie based games.

Number 5: The Bad Guys
Man, 2022 is the year of Dreamworks’ comeback both The Bad Guys and the recent (as im writing this) Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, looks like Disney is gonna wake themselves up for a rematch since the millennium.

Anyway, for a movie based on the book with the same name, you assuming that this is gonna be Dreamworks’ attempt of animated heist movie with anthropomorphic characters? Well, its actually quite of fun movie, sometimes.

For the story, its sort of a struggling life for Mr. Wolf that despite he and his group always like to do a robbery many times and getting away from the police, mainly due to trying to changing to be good than being “The Bad Guys”, as well as Wolf’s distraction from Diana. While its nice for the idea of bad guys trying to be good, but the writing is kinda all over with switching plot elements, is it Wolf trying to be good, Wolf trying connect with his gang or perhaps another one of those villains plot twist, not gonna spoiling for the latter. But despite the writing’s issue, but at least the characters are memorable for their personas and their chemistry, despite the movie is obviously caught from the obvious “Power of Love and Friendship” (Yeah, its one of THOSE…).

But il give a credit for the animation, cause like some movies out there, the animation took an inspiration style from Sony’s animated movies like Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse or even The Mitchells vs The Machines, it may sounds like a risky change, but they did a great work for their own styles and the action scenes from car chasing, breaking out of prison, some shoot’em ups and fighting. As for the humor, they’re mixed from cleverly funny or once again, immature.

Even though its flawed like always, but at least that we can all agree that this is Dreamworks’ redemption film. Well… Either that or the latest Puss in Boots movie.

Number 4: Black Adam
Yeah, the DCU is pretty much self-destructed by WBD as I mentioned before from Henry Cavill’s quitting twice to The Rock pack up his bags to possibly joining MCU, which is where I put Black Adam off the podium, but it doesn’t meant its the worst what the critics said, its a good movie that we can all agree.

Anyway, ever since Shazam was a huge hit, its no stranger that they’re gonna make a Black Adam to hopefully will be a second lightning strike of hit? Well, like always, not as helpful for yet another Box-Office flop. But despite the flop, its still a good movie.

The story is more like the coming back of Teth-Adam for living in modern world that his homeland Kahndaq has been changed from Intergang take over of the city to Justice Society going after Adam based on his threat. While its nice to following up of bringing him back from banishing, but the writing is kinda all over the place, since despite he’s awake, but what’s about, being scolded by Justice Society in order to control for peace and even trying to destroying the Crown of Sabbac. Not to mention, some of the humors are trying is not easy to swallowing a pill, though il give for The Rock’s humor is worth of chuckle for say the least.

Despite some flaws, it looks pretty good with the action, the designs and the fictional setting of Kahndaq, after all, this is from DC comics for creating a fictional city than real-life cities in Marvel. But yes I know, Kahndaq’s setting is obviously into CG, but understandable that this was filmed from the strict rule of pandemic, but hey, at least I enjoy some of superheroes and villain’s costumes and design, either made their own from scratch or look similar from the comic. Speaking of of the characters, they’re fascinating for the most part, especially with The Rock’s portrayal of Black Adam, while the writing is flawed, but at least its a perfect fit for his role as an anti-hero version of Shazam.

While it really sucks that this film is a flop that James Gunn (the unfitted co-CEO of DC Studio that he should’ve stay as filmmaker than a boss of the studio) is pretty much postponing or canceling projects for possibly doing a reboot of DCU, along with The Rock calling quit with Henry Cavill, the movie is good for most part, which again, with all the chaos and fell apart, despite its not the worst movie ever, its no wonder why its not on a podium, much unlike…

Number 3: The Batman
Yup, here we have a newer Batman movie that its not part of DCEU, but its certainly a lot more fun to see compare to some DCEU films we had.

From before, Ben Affleck was originally gonna make his own Batman movie with connection of DCEU, but pretty much bowed out for his reputation is pretty down down from overdose of his drinking habit, yeah, this is probably explained why Matt Reeves took over to make and Robert Pattinson took the cape to playing as Dark night…

Anyway, this version of Batman is more focus to taking seriously that rather than being a typical superhero like we’ve seen many times, instead, its a combination of superhero and solving murder mystery from the notorious The Riddler from investigating to question his whereabouts to unlikely got a help from Catwoman, the latter of which when she’s looking for her missing roommate that she wants revenge, in other words, she wasn’t motivates for luxury, she’s motivated for vengeance against The Riddler or other bad guys for losing her roommate, pretty unusual change for Catwoman, but hey, il give a credit for her development. Speaking of change and development, I also appreciated for this movie’s version of Batman, whereas most of the times Batman is on his journey to beating and tell the truth against the villains, Pattinson’s Batman is sorta similar, but both dark, brutal and investigative for solving a murder mystery, making him almost like an anti-hero for asking suspects over The Riddler.

While the movie is too dark to watch from the dark view (which is a major problem that its nearly unwatchable if its too black from shadows and other stuff all over, much like Godzilla 2014), but il give a credit for the designs and the setting look both pretty impressive to make a grungier version of noire Gotham City, how the place itself is full of crimes that Batman is gonna do a brutal clean-up against them before The Riddler is occurred. Plus, the action scenes from fighting and car chasing are both impressive and brutal to see, even though the brutality is lacking from violence since, like Black Adam, its Rated-PG (Yup, another one of those). There’s also some drug element from Bruce took drugs for her nerve from the past or even Selina Kyle being a drug dealer, but I find those just came off as a plothole while we’re dealing with The Riddler.

Despite some issues, its still a pretty impressive of its dark and brutal version of Batman that we enjoy to watch, especially giving a credit for Robert Pattinson’s role of Dark Knight, definitely earned on the podium spot.

Number 2: Turning Red
While Lightyear may have a fascinating idea, but fell apart from Box-Office flop, but Turning Red is easily a fun and cute movie on Disney+ (sure, it was originally scheduled on theater, but pushed to Disney+ due to obvious reason).

Despite Pixar has a rocky life releasing both in streaming like Disney+ to theaters, at least they gave us some good movies, even though Lightyear is a good movie, but Turning Red is easily one of my favorite.

This film is both fun and cute, and im surely be very happy to watch when this film takes place in Canada, as a Canadian reviewer. This movie is mainly about Mei Lee’s new life as a teen with having best pals and being a fan of 4*Town (kinda ironic that this group has 5 than 4, but its the millennial gimmick for the name, what do you expect), but little did we know is that she ended up having puberty by turning into a big red panda based on her emotion, which it was learned from the ancestor from many years ago, making her getting difficult to living in double life, or maybe likes to sharing her transformation. I enjoy this movie that we sometimes relate and fun to watch, the animation like nice and cute, the voice acting is great and some characters and both fun and likable.

However, while I enjoy this movie, but maybe they could’ve learn from some mistakes from rushed development, and maybe some filler. However, I have to disagree the passed myself of characters came from token characters bingo, cause honestly, despite the generics, at least they’re fun to invest (for the most part) and worth of laughing.

Well, sure, the movie has problem from the reviewers like one reviewer called the movie as both “Sexist” and “Racist”, which he eventually apologized, but not before the infamous “MysteriousMrEnter” called it a mixed-bag movie (which is ok for various opinions), by saying the movie has a lacked of 9/11, which is both out of context and exaggerating for what was he talking about, and Mr. Enter has no remorse for his action in his horrible response on Twitter. No wonder why I hate Mr Enter so much in my life…

Despite some of the flaws, its still a fun and cute animated movie that I considered the best animated movie of the year.

And now… The Number 1 biggest movie of the year 2022 goes to…!!

Number 1: Top Gun: Maverick
What do I have to say for this unexpected sequel that surprisingly becoming a MEGA hit? Well, pretty much a heart-warming and welcome return!

Out of all of movie sequels that its either necessary or not, this one is easily unexpected, a big unexpected to have something promising with some returns, including of course, Tome Cruise as Maverick.

For the story, its pretty fascinating that our old friend Maverick is struggling to keeping his missions open from finishing his scramjet ended up gone wrong (but somehow survived…!) to train the new students in TOPGUN program after many years since he’s been graduated, but when he witnessed Rooster joining in and found out that he’s the son of his old partner Goose, things get too much difficulty to keep him safe without having a same fate or accepting him for the mission, while trying to keeping his role as an instructor. I gotta say, despite his best effort to be a teacher, it seems that he’s yes, its not easy to keep moving over his partner’s demise, especially when Rooster wants to joining in, making it even more difficult, not just a challenging mission against enemy (perhaps the Russians?) with their advanced weapons like their Sukhoi Su-57, but also keeping him away to save his life for, again, what happened from the past. Which makes this story pretty good for the struggle and the emotion for Maverick’s best effort for being both teacher and a fighter pilot.

The movie’s presentation looks incredibly beautiful, yes, there are some were obviously in CG from background and some fighter jets (including the iconic F-14 Tomcat, since it got discontinued since 2006 by US Navy), but at least the visual effects and the quality are pretty damn good for what they’re working on, especially with the action scenes from training to climatic mission.
Speaking of training, while some are done with CG, but some are done with real flight with the use of F/A-18E/F, which like the first Top Gun, its pretty impressive for pulling a flight stunts to demonstrating how to fly, especially with Tom Cruise being badass for pulling his stunt, even if doing a real jet piloting could make them sick both in and out of cockpit.

And the characters are also very good and well-written, especially for Tom Cruise’s role of Maverick that he’s cocky and dangerous for his piloting, but underneath his mask, he’s haunted from the past to struggling to keeping his mission open, especially with his difficulty relationship with Rooster, cause again, since he’s the son of the late Goose, it will be unlikely to put or not put him for the mission if Rooster could give a respect or not, sure they’re a few characters that are there, but at least they either a nice work for the acting and good execution for the story and such.

And of course, lets not forget that one that lot of people got hard to watch, is the discussion scene both Maverick and Iceman (Skip it if you don’t wanna hearing a SPOILER), let me tell you, when I saw this scene, its pretty hard to watch without make you getting emotional, it wasn’t just a struggle for Rooster to stay or go home, but rather the cameo of Val Kilmer, since as we all know, Kilmer accepted to be in a movie, but due to his effecting career from a throat cancer he’s unable to speak proper or consuming, he had to be written in cameo, its pretty sad what he’s become, cause as we all know he deserves a respect, especially with Tom Cruise, since in the movie, Maverick always looking for help from Iceman, but with Iceman’s health declining, it will be difficult to let his mission go on, despite Iceman trusts his old pal that Navy needs both Rooster and his former wingman. Even when I saw this scene, I nearly cried while watching, for both struggling relation with Rooster for the mission or not, and Kilmer welcoming return to playing as Iceman one more time, and he still got it, even though the damage of throat cancer was already done. So if you ever watching a whole movie, including this scene, hope you grab a tissue box, my friends.

Its both beautiful, well-written, lovable and relating characters, the music is pretty good (along with Lady Gaga’s song included) and also pretty emotional as a sequel after more than three decades since the first one and I have to agree that its easily a big improvement over the first one, especially it managed to earning $1.488 Billion, which I guess it explained with an unexpected sequel like this, we’re curiously hyped up for it and they got it, in a big way. And that’s why I considered Top Gun Maverick as the Number 1 best movie of the year 2022.

Whew, so this ends of two-parts countdown of 2022, hope my movie picks lived up, unless if there’s a remaining 2022 films that I forgot about like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish or maybe some that are stuck from Netflix like Wendell and Wild or even Guillermo Del Toro’s take of Pinocchio. Aw well, let know at the comments if there are more movies that I left off.
